Painting, drawing, and photographing were deeply engrained interests of Charles and Ray, dating back to their early childhoods. Ray created paper dolls and fashion drawings as a young girl and studied fashion design until the 1930s. She moved to New York City to explore abstract painting as a student of Hans Hofmann for six years. Charles, in his youth, frequently drew cartoons and taught himself how to develop film; his interest in sketching and structure led him to enroll in architecture school.
