LA FONDA GROUP COFFEE TABLE

DATE - 1961?

This coffee table base was developed concurrently with the chair base for the Eames La Fonda Group. Like the chair base, it features a clear example of how careful Charles and Ray were in striving for simple, direct solutions to any furniture problem. This table base came out five years after introducing the Eames Contract Base, and it’s best understood in relation to that earlier base. The La Fonda Group table base has a more delicate, sculptured form when compared to the Eames contract base, but it was achieved using fewer parts and fewer connections.

Additional Information

The Eames Contract Base is made of three parts produced by three different industrial processes. First, there’s a cast aluminum “spider” on to which tops are affixed and by which tops are supported. Second, there’s a rolled steel pole that provides the height. Last, there’s a cast aluminum base with its own unique shape. These three different parts have to be assembled into one unit.

The La Fonda Group coffee table base is made of two solid cast aluminum parts that are mirror images of one another. The base blades are an extension of the support rods that provide the height, and instead of a separate cast “spider,” the top of the support rods spread out to affix to and support the tabletops.

Instead of attaching three parts to make one base, the fabricator of the La Fonda Group table has only to secure two bolts to affix the parts to one another.
