Callot

Developed for a lecture entitled “Disciplines of the Circus,” a presentation on one of Charles’ favorite subjects, the film is a tour de force of filmmaking, filmed directly from original engravings of the stylized rituals and gestures of commedia dell’arte characters, as depicted in small 3×4 inch engravings by the 17th-Century French printmaker Jacques Callot.
