| 1951 Eames Chairs of Zenaloy |
Vintage Eames is dating this vintage sales document to 1951 which is a guesstimate, and we'll share with you how we arrived at this date.
When first introduced these chairs were only offered in neutral colors; on this sales document the armshells are available in LEMON YELLOW and SEA FOAM GREEN in addition to the neutral tones of Elephant Hide Gray, Greige, and Parchment.
Upholstered armshells were offered in 1952 yet there is no upholstery option here.
We cherish the reference to these chairs as "Zenaloy," a reference to Zenith Plastics with whom the Eames Office closely collaborated for many years.
At this early date Herman Miller is still bragging about the origins of this "plastic material" and correctly attributes the inspiration to "material used in crash helmets and radar housing," the latter inspiration being most specific to Charles and Ray Eames who worked with aircraft parts and the aircraft industry during World War 2. |
