This may be the earliest promotional literature for Eames Molded Plywood Furniture. We are proposing a 1946 date for this, even though the first agreement between Herman Miller and Evans was signed in 1946. Quoting from EAMES DESIGN by Neuhart, Neuhart, and Eames, "...in June 1946 Evans Products granted Herman Miller exclusive rights to market and distribute the plywood furniture as of October 1946." At first, Evans was to make the furniture, as this brochure makes clear, and Herman Miller was only the national distributor.

One item included in this brochure helps to date this at the very beginning of the Evans-Herman Miller relationship. The DTW on the last page, a plywood dining table with molded plywood legs, was initially made and sold by Evans.   An example of it was exhibited at the 1946 MOMA show, but, according to EAMES DESIGN, production of it was discontinued after Evans moved the manufacturing of the Eames designs moved from Venice, CA to Grand Haven, Michigan, which occurred in April 1947.  This brochure is therefore unlikely to have been printed as late as 1948.  At that same time, another dining table helps make the case for the early date-- there is no DTM, the dining table with the fold-down metal legs, which according EAMES DESIGN was introduced in 1947. The absence of the 1947 DTM in this brochure suggests that it was not printed in 1947.

We welcome advice and information from knowledgeable sources. When this Eames design material is not dated, we have to become history detectives.
