Your Eames Story: Naming Our Son EamesPosted August 30, 2017
Meet Eames Kempner, named after the legendary husband-and-wife team, Charles and Ray Eames. His mom Etana tells the story of naming her son and building their design collection.
Growing up, my grandparents had an Eames chair. I didn’t realize how iconic it was as a kid.
When I was pregnant with my son, my husband suggested the name Eames, as in Charles and Ray. My name starts with an E, and I liked the idea of a one syllable name. I felt that I couldn’t make a final decision until we met our baby though, and we had a short list of names we were considering.
When our son was born on July 9, 2012 (11 days before his due date), the midwife who delivered him said, “So, what’s his name?” My husband and I exchanged a nod and a smile, and I said “Eames.” When people ask me where we got that name, I say, “It’s a designer’s last name.”
Since having our son, who recently turned 5, we have become fans and collectors of Charles and Ray’s work. We own several designs by Herman Miller: In my husband’s office, we have the classic Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman. At our kitchen table, we have four different colored Eames Molded Plastic Side Chairs with the Eiffel Tower base (mine is pink!); and we have two of their other designs in our home, including the Eames LCW and LTR.
It makes my husband and I happy to see Eames sitting in an Eames chair.
