Tivoli

DATE - 1961

A ninety-two image, single-screen slide show, was composed of photographs shot during a visit by Charles and Ray to Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark, on the first day of the garden’s annual spring opening in 1959.

Additional Information

The slide show includes general views of the park and its attractions—flowers, ponds, lights, restaurants, and a fireworks display. It was assembled as an example of a pleasant experience spent, according to Ray, “in a magical enchanting atmosphere of play and relaxation for all ages.”

An urban playground, encircled by the city of Copenhagen but quite separate from it, the park offers to its visitors a commedia dell’arte theater, musical performances, and other entertainments without relying on gadgets, rides, and special effects to attract visitors.

The energy, grace, and charm of Tivoli Gardens made a lasting impression on the Eameses, and Charles used them as models for the planning and design of the public spaces in the IBM pavilion at the New York World’s Fair in 1964.
