In 1958, architect and Eames friend Eero Saarinen asked the design duo to address the need for comfortable, sturdy, and attractive public seating for his Washington D.C. Dulles Airport Terminal.
C.F. Murphy Associates, the architects of the two new terminal buildings at the Chicago O’Hare Airport, were also seeking durable seating, resistant to wear and easy to maintain and repair.
While the Office originally developed the Eames Tandem Sling Seating as a solution for Dulles and O’Hare’s terminals, it became a robust, time-proven, comfortable place for people to relax while waiting in airports, train stations, and other public spaces all over the world.
The sling system consists of single or double back-to-back rows of seats. Its simple modular system makes it possible to add any number of seat units, with or without tabletops. The design is manufactured by our partners, Vitra and Herman Miller.
