This early example of the "Plastic Pivot Chair", as it was described in the 1959 Herman Miller Illustrated Price List, has an early, solid cast aluminum "contract" base. Examples of the more common, hollow cast aluminum "contract" base are illustrated elsewhere in this Catalogue, for example, please see PSC 1962 .
This chair of parchment fiberglass gives us a chance to view the individual components of this chair carefully. Note the black, patented Eames "spider" that sits atop the pedestal and cradles the chair. This spider is a refinement of the device that the Eames Office first introduced at the 1949 MOMA Low Cost Furniture Competition.
Here are the markings on the bottom of this shell. There is an inverted "B" and the "S" in a circle, which we are still researching.
