Within its first decade of operation, the Eames Office made this device in order to better understand the way people sit.

As Charles acknowledged, “We’ve always been aware of not even attempting to solve the problem of how people should sit, but of rather arbitrarily accepting the way people do sit and of operating within that framework.”

The key to understanding how people do sit was facilitated by this tool, whose seat and height position could change to better suit the needs of the seated individual.  Such in-depth, hands-on, iterative exploration was at the core of Charles and Ray’s design process.
