At Altitude features Powers of TenPosted May 9, 2018
June 2 – September 30, 2018: See the Eameses’ best-known film, Powers of Ten, in the new exhibition, At Altitude, at Towner Art Gallery in East Sussex, United Kingdom.
At Altitude explores how our experience of landscape, time, and space has altered through the introduction of new elevated perspectives on the world that were unknown to earlier generations.
Ranging from early aviation to drone surveillance, the exhibition charts these changing perspectives, illustrating how perception has shifted from the time in which aerial images were rare and exhilarating, to today’s all-enveloping, but strangely flattening vantage point of Google Earth and satellite technologies.
At Altitude presents historical and contemporary works that elucidate the links between the ever-changing methods of observing the world and how this has been interpreted by artists through painting, sculpture, photography, and film.
Charles and Ray’s best-known film, Powers of Ten, will be shown on a loop throughout the duration of the exhibit. The film explores the “relative size of things in the universe, and the effect of adding another zero,” by taking viewers on a journey out to the edge of the known universe–100 million lightyears away–and down the the level of a carbon atom.
The exhibition includes additional artists such as Mishka Henner, Jananne Al-Ani, Tacita Dean, Wolfgang Tilmans, and Cornelia Parker.
At Altitude is an Arts Council Collection National Partner Exhibition.
