The World of Charles and Ray Eames at MAAT in Lisbon, Portugal

Posted September 26, 2016

October 5, 2016 – January 8, 2017: The Barbican Art Gallery’s acclaimed exhibition, The World of Charles and Ray Eames, is traveling from Umeå, Sweden, to Lisbon, Portugal.

Charles and Ray’s partnership began in 1941 and lasted a lifetime. For them, there was no separation between life and work. Their unique collaboration gave rise to a vast body of pioneering work that had an immense influence on the field of design.

The Eameses’ studio in Venice, California, was an interdisciplinary “laboratory” where, for four decades, the design duo and their staff researched and developed products, furniture, movies, slideshows, graphic design, architectural projects, and new teaching models.

The World of Charles and Ray Eames explores the variety of worlds in which Charles and Ray lived and worked. It looks at their early years developing products for the War effort and the way they later applied those skills to designing furniture. It also investigates the work they made at their house and studio, and their collaborations with a vast international network of clients and friends. The show uniquely positions examples of the Eameses’ most famous designs along side many of their experimental prototypes and rarely-seen works in films, photography, and architecture.
