Eames at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.

One of the Eames Office's most important and resonant partnerships is with the Library of Congress in Washington, D. C. In 1976 Charles and Ray Eames began working with the Library in order to preserve their vast collection of work in the nation's capital. Ray Eames continued the work with the Library of Congress until her death in 1988, and their daughter Lucia Eames (proprietor of the Eames Office), completed the task.

Charles and Ray Eames were confident that the Library of Congress would best be able to secure their artifacts and still make them accessible to researchers, scholars and other interested parties. The Library was pleased to do so, recognizing the major impact that Charles and Ray Eames had on American design, particularly in the realms of graphic, textile, furniture, architectural, and exhibit design.

Collectively known as The Work of Charles and Ray Eames, the body of work at the Library of Congress numbers more than one million items in a variety of media. The Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division has over three-quarters of a million photographs (750,000+) that are copyrighted by the Eames Office. The Manuscripts Division has the 2-D material that was existent in the Office. The Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division contains many of the films by Charles and Ray Eames. No other collection is represented as deeply in as many different divisions at the Library of Congress.
