Photography and the City

DATE - 1968

The Eames Office designed Photography & the City: The Evolution of an Art and a Science for the Arts and Industries Building of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. The exhibition explored photography’s impact on our view of urban spaces through various themes: architecture, city planning, photojournalism, and mapmaking. Urban scenes were photographed by the influential Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre, Jacob Riis, Lewis Hine, Émile Zola, Dorothea Lange, Alfred Stieglitz, and Berenice Abbott. The Eames Office images printed and prepared for the exhibition were curated from the prestigious collections of Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, and private owners.
