Designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1960 for the lobby of the Time Life building in New York

The Lobby Chair was to become famous during the 1972 World Chess Championship in Reykjavik.

With The Cold War ever-present the game attracted masses of media attention, as the young American Bobby Fischer took on Russian Boris Spassky.

With The Russian winning and tension mounting, Bobby Fischer halted proceedings.

He deemed the wooden chairs provided were too uncomfortable.

He insisted on using the Eames Lobby Chair and wouldn’t proceed until one arrived.

With the final swinging in The American’s favour. Boris Spassky claimed he was at a disadvantage and was too supplied the Lobby Chair.

Bobby Fischer’s momentum continued and went on to defeat Boris Spassky.

The introduction of The Lobby chair being a key player in the psychological ulterior sub plot.

In the UK the chair is famous for featuring in the chat show ‘Parkinson’. Presented by interviewer and broadcaster Michael Parkinson.
